My wife and I flew to Scotland several years ago and we hit some turbulence. My wife looked at me and I looked at her and I wasn't sure how to react. So I looked at the cabin crew. Not even a hint of concern on their faces. I told my wife that either they were the greatest actors on the face of the planet or that we were all going to die. We didn't die and managed to survive the ensuing 5 flights as well.

My first boss, Mr. Morton Sobin piloted a bomber set up for aerial reconnaissance, once landing back in England as the only survivor of a mission. He suvived because of all the extra armor installed beneath him. He never talked to me about his wartime exploits. His son-in-law told me that once, upon returning from a mission, he celebrated by flying beneath a bridge in London (which didn't go unnoticed by the brass), he was called onto the carpet for a thorough reaming. He taught me so much about photography in the first summer I worked for him that I arrived at college (RIT) in the fall with the photography skills of an upper-classman. He also sent me on my first ever ride in an airplane, taking off from the Hackensack River in a seaplane to photograph a factory on the Hudson River. I had to loosen my seatbelt to lean out of the cabin to take the photos.

Yeah Matt they want you to die so you won't sue them. That's why they spend all that money on developing safety systems like escape slides, structurally engineered seats to best keep you alive, and the oxygen system for all passengers and crew to stop you from dying from oxygen deprivation at altitude. And then there's the millions still being spent on aviation fuel to make it safer in the event of a crash. People who lack the capacity for critical thinking should not be having these kind of discussions on air, seriously stick to Sport, & Men's fashion.

Another retired controller here. And even longer as a pilot. As such, I have dealt with these situations from both sides of the microphone. I have had controllers try to tell me how to fly my airplane and I have had pilots who wanted to do ATC by committee. Neither situation works. A clear understanding of roles and responsibilities in needed for the system to work properly. Unfortunately, the aviation community attracts an inordinate number of people with large, overly sensitive egos. When two inflated egos collide, crazy things happen. As individuals, it is each of our responsibilities to evaluate every situation we are in and seek the most effective route to a desirable solution. If your ego prevents you from doing that, maybe you should stick to building dog houses or some other such non-consequential occupation.

A condescending tone of voice is unprofessional. You can correct someone without trying to make yourself feel superior and make them feel stupid. I hope she doesn't talk down to her kids (if any) that way, as I see many parents do. Yes, the pilot underestimated the time required. He made a mistake, he knows that. Move on.

Ha! Amsterdam, I guessed it. I'm fascinated with cities around the world. I spend a lot of time looking them up, and reading as much information as I can find about them. I look at pictures of them, and look them up on Google Earth. I explore the cities at street level.

In the last case, I think the ATC guy tone wasn't helpful and probably caused that pilot to make further mistakes...not saying the pilot is blameless, but we've seen many AT controllers keep professional and keep the anxiety level down with calm tone even as they tell the pilot to write down the number and call the tower, because the pilot during landing/take off and taxiing has got a lot on his hands and you don't want to induce anxiety and cause a bigger issue. Let violations be dealt with after, not during.

Enjoyed watching this. I would also live to see a cockpit Sim environment for how it looks when problems happen. Like what does it look and sound like for a crew of 2 or 3 to encounter various scenarios. Maybe base them off real life atc situations. Fill in some of the gaps.

Just wish you could show more of your surroundings of the cities where you land, but understand that you're PROBABLY pretty beat and need rest. In a lower altitude, emergency landing is imminent situation like this, isn't the 'fuel on board' information really for Crash Fire Rescue so they essentially know how big of a bomb they have coming in on the runway? Hours might be key in other emergency situations, but the fire crews want to know how many pounds/tons/gallons of Jet A are onboard, not how many hours the plane theoretically could remain flying...

I understand the airplane will fly on one engine, but, at least on small twins you are supposed to avoid turning into the dead engine. Is it smart to tell an emergency aircraft with one engine inop, to go fly a hold with two minute turns?
